Kathryn Eileen Robinson Malcom

June 24, 1946–October 31, 2022
Kathryn Eileen Robinson Malcom of Birmingham, formerly of Scottsboro, Alabama, died October 31, 2022, at UAB Hospital.  She was 76.

Mrs. Malcom is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Malcom and son-in-law, Gerald Tysver, Jr., both of Birmingham.  She was preceded in death by daughter, Ellie, and a sister, Sarah ArDell Robinson.

Mrs. Malcom was born in Gadsden, a daughter of Naomi Martin Robinson and Joseph Franklin Robinson. She grew up on Forrest Avenue in Gadsden, was a member of the Twelfth Street Baptist Church, and graduated Gadsden High School.  She married John Alfred Malcom in 1965, and graduated Jacksonville State University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree.  She became a certified social worker with the Alabama Department of Pensions and Security (now Alabama Department of Human Resources).

Changing careers, Mrs. Malcom received the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1983.  In law school, she was a Delegate to the James L. Hughes International Law Society and was a member of the Trial Advocacy Board. Leaving private practice in 1988, she was appointed Assistant Attorney General by Governor Guy Hunt, working in the Mobile office.  She later served four years as an Assistant District Attorney in Madison County.  She moved to Scottsboro in 1992 and practiced law there until retiring in 2010.  While in Scottsboro, she was the municipal prosecutor for the City of Scottsboro, was the Stevenson City Attorney, prosecuted for the City of Bridgeport and represented other municipalities, businesses, and individuals.   She was President of the Jackson County Bar Association in 2001-2002, was involved in various community and civic activities, including the Jackson County Bama Club, and attended the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she occasionally sang in the choir.

She was intellectually curious, funny, sarcastic, widely-read, knew the answer to every trivia question ever asked, a true friend, a loyal supporter of the people and causes she loved, creative and artistic, and devoted to her animals—especially Larkin, a stray pup she rescued from Old Larkinsville Road in Scottsboro years ago.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Alabama Public Television, which Eileen enjoyed immensely. The address is:
